Not every fabric benefits from additional structure. Some materials are specifically designed to be soft, fluid or flexible, and adding a stable support layer can change the way they were intended to look and move. Woven fusible interlining is generally better suited to fabrics that can accommodate additional structure, such as suiting materials, heavier polyester blends, brocades and certain cotton fabrics. It may not be the right choice for extremely lightweight or sheer materials where even a light support layer could make the finished garment appear stiff.
Stretch fabrics also require careful consideration. Fabrics containing spandex or other stretch fibres are designed to move with the wearer, while woven reinforcement is comparatively stable. Combining the two without testing can restrict movement or create stress around the bonded area. Sheer fabrics such as chiffon and georgette can face a different problem because the reinforcement may become visible or affect their natural drape. Lace, net and open-weave fabrics can also be difficult to bond evenly. Before choosing a product, manufacturers should ask what the fabric is supposed to do in the finished garment. If softness and movement are the priority, adding heavy structure may work against the design.
A sample test is the safest way to determine whether a particular interlining fabric is suitable. Take the exact production fabric and apply a small piece using the intended fusing conditions. Once it has cooled, compare the treated section with the untreated fabric. Check whether the drape has changed, whether the bond is even and whether the fabric still feels comfortable. If the result is too stiff, a lighter grade may be worth testing. If the fabric is highly elastic or delicate, another construction or reinforcement method may be more appropriate. Knowing when to avoid a product can be just as important as knowing when to use it.
